Dear Friends,
It has taken a long time since the last update and now there are so many developments that the present update is very long. Nevertheless it is important to know the current state of the two lakes, Malawi and Tanganyika. Although the mbuna in Lake Malawi don't seem to be affected much by the onslaught of fishermen, who have now virtually removed all utaka from the southern part of the lake, I believe the lake is on track for a similar collapse as we have seen in Lake Victoria. The visibility has deteriorated in the last years and is now at a point where it prevents algal growth at depths of more than 10 meters in some places. The story from Lake Tanganyika is a much more positive one, fortunately.
